A Song for Queenie

Our tribute is to a lady born in Brighton and in her younger years gained some fame as a curtain maker for the stars such as Dora Bryan who lived in Sussex Square. She spent the war years working in an ammunitions factory in London, which must have been a dangerous job, especially dealing with tracer bullets: but she was serving her country at a difficult time.

She met her husband Jack, a war veteran from Burma and had 2 children, and is now head of a family of 16 great- and grandchildren. She has a great sense of humour: this special birthday is in fact just her 21st!! This is a real cen-teen-ary!!

You can dance, You can jive, laughing through all of your life.

Full of fun, only 21, you’re our dancing Queen.

Brighton’s where you made your name,

Dora’s curtains brought you fame,

Sewing, stitching, and pleating,

Getting them to swing,

They were fit for a king.

Working in the war to save,

Serving all the lads so brave,

All that “ammo” whizzing,

Such a dodgy time,

You had to take your chance.

But then you always dance,

You’re our Queenie’s queen,

You’re the “teen” in  cen-teen-ary

Queenie’s queen,  all the world you have seen.

You can dance, you can jive, laughing through  all of your life

Full of fun, only 21, you’re our dancing Queen

Soldier Jack became your man,

Valerie and Michael came along.

Many more to follow, the youngest only 3:

Head of the family!

But then you always dance,

You are our Queenie’s queen,

You’re the “teen” in  cen-teen-ary

Queenie’s queen, all the world you have seen.

We can dance, we can jive, with you through all of your life.

Full of fun, only 21, you’re our dancing Queen.

Queenie’s  queen,

It’s her cen-teen-ary.
