Here is a set of lyrics for an 80th birthday.
Grandad is a lively 80 year old with a chequered history much loved by all the family! There is the story of his early romance with Margaret as a butcher’s boy, her father’s threatening disapproval leading to an abrupt end to their teenage relationship. Then his war time service posted to an unromantic location in Wales, followed by various drinking exploits ending up with a car down a subway and a few nights in hospital. There is the story of his lengthy butcher’s rounds to farmers in the countryside where more time is spent chatting than working. Yet he is still active in the bowling club and has his loving grandchildren around him
A Song for Bert to the tune of “There’s no-one quite like Granma”
Grandad we love you, Grandad we do.
Though you may be far away,
We think of you.
His first romance with Marg’ret
Was a long, long time ago.
But Mag’s old man, he wasn’t so keen
On a butcher’s boy in tow.
So one day when dad caught them,
It gave him so much pain,
He went and got his shot gun and
He chased Bert down Wxxx Lane
Grandad we love you, Grandad we do.
Though you may be far away,
We think of you.
Bert did his National Service
And one day he was told:
“You’re off to Athens, Private Rxxxx”,
His dreams of Greece unfold.
A brave and trusty soldier,
He had his jabs in dread.
What a surprise his posting was
To St. Athens, Wales, instead.
Grandad we love you, Grandad we do.
Though you may be far away,
We think of you.
His best mate was Paul Kxxx,
A fine upstanding chap,
Whose only drink was orange juice
But who could fall for that!!
After one night’s heavy drinking
In Pxxxxxx it is said
They drove home via a subway, ending
Up in a hospital bed.
Grandad we love you, Grandad we do.
Though you may be far away,
We think of you.
Sterling Moss we used to call him,
As on his round he went,
Chatting to all the folk he met
It was hours and hours and hours and hours he spent!
Gxxxx Sxxx was the last one,
Who sat with pipe and plate,
In a hedge right up to midnight
When Sterling turned up late!
Grandad we love you, Grandad we do.
Though you may be far away,
We think of you.
And Bert’s now got to 80,
One time captain of the bowls,
Still MC at the whist drive, under
Par with 18 holes.
He’s loved by all and sundry,
Which everybody knows
Especially by his grandchildren, Jxxx
Cxxx, Mxxx and Rxxx
Grandad we love you, Grandad we do.
Though you may be far away,
We think of you.
Grandad we love you, Grandad we do
